Social Networks and Social Exclusion
This class will cover the following themes:
- Social network theory and theories of social integration and historical perspective from Durkheim to early anthropologists and sociologists
- Distinguishing social network (structure) from social support (function)
- Measures and methods for both assessing social networks and support. Include measures of social isolation and exclusion. These measures include ego-centric naming instruments as well as summary measures.
- Empirical literature on the impact of social networks and social support on a range of health outcomes from cardiovascular outcomes to physical and cognitive function. Discuss limitations of observational evidence- issues related to study design and life course
- Reviewing intervention literature- results of randomized trials to modify aspects of social support
- Current controversies in the field
