Social Networks and Social Exclusion

This class will cover the following themes:

  1. Social network theory and theories of social integration and historical perspective from Durkheim to early anthropologists and sociologists
  2. Distinguishing social network (structure) from social support (function)
  3. Measures and methods for both assessing social networks and support. Include measures of social isolation and exclusion.  These measures include ego-centric naming instruments as well as summary measures.
  4. Empirical literature on the impact of social networks and social support on a range of health outcomes from cardiovascular outcomes to  physical and cognitive function. Discuss limitations of observational evidence- issues related to study design and life course
  5. Reviewing intervention literature- results of randomized trials to modify aspects of social support
  6. Current controversies in the field

This website is a result of a project funded under the Health theme of the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community, Grant Agreement number 282605. Project: INDEPTH Training and Research Centres of Excellence (INTREC). The work was carried by a Consortium team of five university-based centres in Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Indonesia and USA and by one research network of demographic surveillance sites in LMICs with headquarters in Ghana (INDEPTH).
